No changes to STAR program in this year’s NYS budget

The New York State budget, passed in the midst of a pandemic, did not include a provision connected to the STAR program, which would have brought a change to it.

The D&C reports that the state budget did not include Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to move all homeowners who earn more than $200,000 a year or more to a ‘star check’ program.

Those who make less than $200,000 will continue to receive the exemption up-front. The state had started moving homeowners from a check to an income tax credit. This proposal would have moved those in the ‘$200,000 and above’ category to the credit.

Everyone else would continue receiving a check each fall.

Lawmakers from around New York fought the change, citing that it would hurt suburban homeowners.
