On Wednesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said something different than had previously been stated.
He hinted that schools could be reopened on a region-by-region basis, much like the rest of the economy.
While the state is not ready now for schools to reopen, he said that there is a possibility that schools reopen by region.
One major reason for this move is tied to the childcare service that K-12 schools provide. Especially for younger students.
“One of the first integral pieces: business and schools and transportation. You need those three gears to turn at the same time,” Cuomo said. “You can’t turn the business gear which is intermeshed with the school gear, which is intermeshed with the transportation gear. You turn one gear you have to turn all three gears.”
He said schools would need protocols in place for social distancing, disinfecting, and ensuring that students are protected while at school.
