Research being done locally to develop antibody testing for COVID-19

As work continues on a vaccine for COVID-19, researchers say they are more likely to develop and produce a reliable antibody test to study to the virus.

Some of that work is being done by companies and research facilities in Rochester, according to 13WHAM.

At URMC, researchers say creating a reliable test is 2-4 weeks out, yet mass producing them for the American public could still be 2-4 months away.

“The idea is those antibodies are an indication of both who has been infected in the past, and we hope a sign of immunity against re-infection from the current virus or future infection from a related virus,” said Dr. Martin Zand, a clinical researcher with URMC.
