The last time Weedsport’s boys basketball team won a sectional championship was 1980.
Warriors coach Jon Sgarlata wasn’t born yet. CNN had just launched on television. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was in theaters.
That changed Saturday afternoon as Weedsport (22-2) ended its 40-year title drought with a 61-52 victory over Cooperstown (18-6) in the Class C final at SRC Arena.
An emotional Jake Brown fell to his knees once the final buzzer sounded. He had just scored a game-high 21 points along with four rebounds to lead the Warriors to a victory over the same team that eliminated them from last season’s sectional semifinals.
