Christmas Eve crash in Cayuga County remains under investigation

On Christmas Eve a two-car crash in the town of Mentz left four people seriously injured.

Several weeks later that accident remains under investigation. The crash happened on Centerport Road shortly before 7 p.m. near the intersection with Nauvoo Road.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office said on Christmas Day that an investigation into the crash was underway, and that four people had been seriously hurt. However, not a lot of additional information was immediately made available.

The Sheriff’s Office says that a vehicle operated by Madison Bannister, 21, of Port Byron was traveling west on Centerport Road when it collided with a vehicle operated by Keith Wiers, 46, of Weedsport.

Two passengers inside the Bannister vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Brandan Ellis, and 17-year-old Darius Jennings, were able to remove themselves from the car after it caught fire following the wreck. Bannister was able to escape the vehicle as well.

The investigation remains active and charges have not yet been determined or filed.
