NYS Department of Transportation prepares for winter

The New York State Department of Transportation hosted a Snow and Ice Control Workshop in the Center of Progress Building at the New York State Fairgrounds. The workshop provides local municipalities and contractors with training on proper procedures for using salt during winter operations.

“A key to a successful winter season is having trained operators in the truck and thankfully Governor Cuomo gave us an additional 500 staff members to put in the trucks this year,” said Sean Hennessey, DOT Assistant Commissioner.

Those crews have been training the entire year. The DOT is now filling salt barns, making sure brine tanks are full and sharpening blades. The goal is to drop as little salt as possible on our roads.

“Dropping less salt has a couple of positive effects: It affects your bottom line, it is great for the environment and it makes sure you have a safe traveling surface to get to work or wherever you are going,” Hennessey said.
