A local fire chief is facing felony charges following an investigation into stolen bingo money from the department and community he served.
Troopers say that 27-year-old Kyle M. Verstraete, of Newark was charged with falsifying business records, a felony; as well as one count of petit larceny.
It’s allegedly that Verstraete, while serving as Marbletown Fire Chief in Wayne County, falsified bingo records for the department to conceal his theft of bingo proceeds.
Troopers say that a search warrant was executed determining that Verstraete possessed $732 in cash. Investigators determined that he omitted sales; and added other sales, which did not happen to hide the theft.
State Police say that what they found Thursday night when the search warrant was executed was consistent with actions over the last several months.
He was released on an appearance ticket. It’s unclear if the investigation remains active.
