More than $41 million worth of state tax refunds were stopped by the Office of the State Comptroller due to questionable filings, according to a letter sent to the Department of Taxation and Finance.
The Office of the State Comptroller reviewed over 7.7 million refunds for payments that totaled more than $10 billion. During the review, the office stopped 12,783 questionable refunds worth $41.3 million.
The most common reason a refund was stopped and returned to the Department of Taxation and Finance was due to a taxpayer claiming personal income tax credits based on incorrect information, including an inaccurate number of dependents or understated income.
