Along with pencils and notebooks, Tyler Walsh will be carrying something very important in his backpack when he heads back to school this fall: an inhaler and Epi-pen.
Tyler was diagnosed with asthma when he was eight months old.
“He was having some breathing issues,” said Jenna Walsh, Tyler’s mother.
“I’m pretty scared of this neighborhood cat because then I could have to go to the hospital,” Tyler said.
Tyler has been rushed to the emergency department five times due to asthma attacks.
“It’s gotten to the point where we don’t know if it was an asthma attack due to the anaphylaxis or vice versa, but you could see his chest really laboring to breath,” Jenna said.
“Asthma is an inflammation of the lungs where the tubes that carry air to and from the lungs get swollen and then they narrow,” said Dr. Lisa Y Harris, Chief Medical Officer and Commercial Line of Business for Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield.
