Two school board members are fighting to keep the jobs they were elected to do in the Wayne Central School District.
Steve Gallaher and Dennis Landry are accused of overstepping their positions by launching into their own investigation. On September 6, 2018 they were able to gain access into Freewill Elementary School.
They say the school was left unlocked and unsecured by Superintendent Dr. Calvin Mathis.
On Monday, a fact-finding hearing was convened on the matter.
The sign posted on the entrance to the Wayne Central High School warned that no media cameras were allowed. People were welcome, yet their cell phones and laptops were not. Wayne County Sheriff's deputies kept watch.
"I think there's a huge concern about access," said Teresa Marie Jeffery, who has a son in ninth grade.
The high school auditorium seats hundreds. Yet, at 11 a.m. on a Monday, fewer than 30 people were there to hear the facts. Contrast that with a recent packed school board meeting.
"This is a witch hunt," said Keith Manne, who attended the hearing. "We're hearing a lot of vindictiveness. I was hoping for a lot better from our board."
