SUNY Geneseo swimmers urging Cuomo to lift ban preventing championship travel

Thirteen student-athletes at SUNY colleges have qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships, but are unable to stay in the state where it is being held.

The championship, which runs from March 20-23, is being held in Greensboro, North Carolina. Back in 2016, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order in protest of the so-called bathroom bill in North Carolina. The order prevents all non-essential state travel to North Carolina due to the state's law that prevents transgender people from using bathrooms that are not designated for the gender assigned to them at birth.

Ten students from SUNY Geneseo, two from SUNY Brockport and one from SUNY Cortland qualified for the tournament.

The ban specifically focuses on publicly-funded or publicly-sponsored travel – with the exception of travel that is deemed necessary for New York State law, the protection of public welfare, health or safety, or if it was part of a prior contractual obligation.

As a result, the students will have to stay in Virginia, and commute more than an hour one way to the tournament in order to compete each day.
