Abuse victims urge Gov. Cuomo to sign Child Victims Act

Molestation victims are urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to quickly sign the Child Victims Act into law.

Cuomo has said he supports the bill and would sign it.

The bill would extend the statute of limitations to give victims more time to seek criminal charges or sue their abusers. Lawmakers passed the bill last week and many supporters are now wondering why it hasn’t been signed yet.

One group of abuse victims wrote the governor, urging him to take action on the bill and saying that victims have waited long enough.

A spokesman for the governor says the bill will be signed soon but stopped short of announcing a date.

The Legislature still has to formally transmit the bill, which can sometimes take weeks, before the legal wording of the bill is reviewed by the governor’s legal team.
