The Rochester Downtown Development Corporation is conducting a national search for a president and chief executive officer to lead its downtown economic development work, with applications due Nov. 25 and an anticipated start in early 2027.
The Chason Group is handling the search, according to an RDDC news release. Candidates are asked to submit a resume and cover letter through the firm's application form.
The next executive will work with the board and Executive Committee to lead staff and operations, diversify funding and turn the organization's strategic direction into a three-year work plan. The position also involves downtown advocacy, investment promotion and community engagement.
The executive will lead the Partnership for Downtown Rochester, a separate nonprofit supporting public-private revitalization, and provide leadership for affiliated entities including The Commissary, a food business incubator and licensed shared kitchen.
Downtown priorities and partnerships
RDDC describes three priorities for the role: telling downtown's story, activating downtown, and improving safety, livability and economic vitality. Responsibilities include using reliable market information to guide advocacy and investment promotion, supporting year-round programming and storefront activation, and building partnerships that support business growth.
The work spans downtown's residential neighborhoods, employers, entrepreneurs, restaurants, cultural destinations and public spaces along the Genesee River. The executive will be expected to coordinate those interests while aligning staff, resources and measurable outcomes.
“Downtown Rochester's future depends on people and organizations working together around shared priorities,” RDDC board Chair Victoria Van Voorhis said.
Van Voorhis said the board wants someone who listens, builds trust and can move economic development plans into action. She encouraged community partners and professional networks to share the opening with prospective candidates.
Qualifications and how to apply
Candidates should have leadership results in downtown revitalization, economic development or related work, along with experience managing staff, finances, strategy, governance and partnerships. Knowledge of downtown markets and real estate investment is also sought.
The organization is seeking fundraising, foundation relations and grant management skills, strong communication and coalition building, integrity and inclusive engagement. Planning, public-space or development-financing experience is valuable. Senior leaders ready to move into a chief executive role are encouraged to apply.
Founded in 1977, RDDC works on business and investment attraction, entrepreneurship, advocacy, market intelligence and public-space activation in downtown Rochester.
Applications are due Nov. 25 through The Chason Group. Questions may be directed to James McCoy, the firm's vice president, at jmccoy@thechasongroup.com or 770-842-4774.
