Cayuga Nation Police has promoted a veteran officer to deputy superintendent, giving him responsibility for a range of administrative and compliance duties. The promotion took effect Sept. 27, according to a release provided by the department.
Jeffrey Ross, a retired Cayuga County Sheriff's Office patrol sergeant, joined Cayuga Nation Police as a sergeant in November 2022. He has served as both a frontline patrol supervisor and an administrative sergeant.
His new position is primarily administrative. The department said his responsibilities include policy development, budgeting, acquisitions, grants, scheduling, internal discipline, compliance with state and federal requirements, and accreditation work.
Ross already has worked on department policies as an administrative sergeant. The release credits him with revising policies to meet accreditation requirements, a responsibility that will remain part of his new assignment.
He also serves as the department's Terminal Agency Coordinator for eJustice and the Tribal Access Program. In that role, he has developed and implemented policies governing access to and use of those systems, according to the department.
Ross received a Law Enforcement Commendation Award at the Central New York Association of Chiefs of Police's fall 2024 event. The department said the recognition was for his work expanding patrol services.
In addition to his law enforcement experience, Ross is a certified paralegal. His background includes county patrol supervision before he joined the Nation's police department nearly four years ago. The department serves the people of the Cayuga Nation and identifies crime prevention and partnerships with the community as parts of its mission.
Ross lives in Cayuga with his wife. He has adult children and two grandchildren and enjoys college football, according to the release announcing his promotion.
