Hobart rowing completed its fall racing season Sunday, Nov. 1, with three varsity eights, two afternoon eights and a varsity four competing at the Princeton Chase on Carnegie Lake in New Jersey.
The Statesmen's varsity eight finished its opening race in 13 minutes, 17.571 seconds for 27th place, according to HWS Athletics.
The crews raced in clear skies and a light, variable breeze against a field that included Ivy League teams. Hobart entered different lineups for the afternoon round after three boats raced in the morning.
Three eights race in the opening round
The first varsity eight maintained its position throughout its race, neither passing another crew nor being passed, the team reported. It held a stroke rate of 35 and finished about a third of a second behind Marist's second varsity boat.
The lineup included Ellie Dial, Nicholas Short, LJ Justus, James Faulkner, Kiré Richardson, Buckley Newbold, Fletcher Grantham, William Walker and Henry McComb.
Grantham said the crew gave what it could on the course and identified improved fitness as a priority for its next race.
Hobart's second varsity eight finished 38th in 13:38.121, about a second behind Drexel's fourth varsity crew. The Statesmen caught Fordham in the opening 1,500 meters, reached a stroke rate of 36 and caught Bucknell's second varsity before raising the rate to 38 for the final 300 meters, according to the team.
That boat included Sam Hyman, Braden Hendrickson, Stefan Markovic, Elliot Morris, Jude Maguire-Mueller, Joey Burvis, Cameron Nixon, Nolan Adams and Liam O'Connor. Hyman, a senior captain, said the crew left its energy on the course.
The third varsity eight placed 54th in 14:49.886. The mostly first-year crew maintained a rate of 32 without passing other boats, competing against other freshmen and Ivy League walk-ons.
Its lineup included Colin MacLean, Jack Rudolph, Dylan Faulk, Liam Yokanovich, Matthew Eggert, Nathan Bernier, Elijah Ager, Dawson Greene and Andrew Senorski.
Afternoon boats use different combinations
Hobart's afternoon first varsity eight finished 13th in 14:10.339. It settled at a stroke rate of 32 and tried to close the gap to Georgetown through the finish, the team reported.
The crew consisted of Duncan Wolski, Hendrickson, O'Connor, Morris, Nixon, Newbold, Grantham, Walker and Yokanovich.
The second varsity eight completed its afternoon race in 14:12.233. The team described varying rates through the turns while opening space over Marist's first varsity boat.
Oliver Benedict, Rudolph, Adams, Maguire-Mueller, Faulk, Markovic, Eggert, Greene and Senorski made up that crew. Maguire-Mueller described a consistent split throughout the race.
Varsity four finishes despite equipment problem
Short, Richardson, Faulkner and Justus raced in the varsity four, which finished 17th in 15:30.804.
The boat began at a stroke rate of 32 through the first 1,500 meters. The Statesmen dealt with a malfunction in the track at the third seat and were boxed in by other crews but completed the race, according to HWS Athletics.
The regatta concluded Hobart's fall schedule.
