Julia Ramsey scored with 1:06 remaining and Martha Broderick made a final save with seven seconds left as Cornell beat Penn 3-2 Saturday at Ellen Vagelos Field in Philadelphia.
The Big Red improved to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in the Ivy League heading into next weekend's conference tournament, according to Cornell Athletics.
Ramsey, a senior and Cornell's career assists leader, drove along the right endline and scored from a sharp angle at 58:54 to break a 2-2 tie.
Penn pulled goalkeeper Ruby de Frees for an extra attacker, but Broderick stopped Victoria Manzur's shot in the closing seconds to preserve the victory.
Broderick and the defense withstand late pressure
Broderick finished with 11 saves, including six in the fourth quarter. Penn earned six penalty corners in that period, and Cornell defended three consecutive corners in the closing minutes.
The Quakers held an 18-10 advantage in shots, a 14-9 edge in shots on goal and a 7-4 margin in penalty corners. De Frees made five saves for Penn.
Riley Thomson scored both Penn goals. Her second, on a penalty corner at 50:23 with assists from Maxi Aranowitz and Jazmin Borensztein, tied the game at 2-2.
Cornell answers an early Penn goal
Thomson opened the scoring at 4:01 with a shot from the top of the circle that got past a screened Broderick.
Cornell answered six seconds later. Annabel Cheveley's penalty-corner shot deflected off a defender and went over de Frees' shoulder, with Delaney Keegan and Ramsey credited with assists.
Stella Thibeault put Cornell ahead 2-1 at 25:49, carrying the ball into the circle and scoring from near the top. That lead held through halftime and the scoreless third quarter before Thomson's equalizer.
Cornell will face Princeton in an Ivy League Tournament semifinal Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m., according to the next-game listing in Cornell’s official recap.
