Seneca Falls public works director files claim against town

Seneca Falls Public Works Director Peter Messmer has filed a notice of claim alleging the town mishandled his employment and jeopardized his civil service protections, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

Messmer filed the notice Oct. 22 without an attorney, preserving his ability to pursue a lawsuit.

He alleges the town hired him into a department whose establishing law was not properly filed with the state, undermining the legal basis for his position and permanent employment status.

The claim also alleges financial and career losses tied to his $85,000 annual salary and a severe rotator cuff injury sustained while performing manual labor July 24.

Town Clerk Melissa Brown declined to comment on the claim, which names the town without identifying individual officials as respondents.
