Shopify estimates its business ecosystem supported 253,000 New York jobs

Shopify estimates that businesses and partners connected to its platform supported 253,000 jobs and $75.6 billion in economic activity across New York State during the year ending June 30, 2026.

The figures appear in the company’s Entrepreneur Effect report, whose national findings were highlighted in The Harris Poll’s Oct. 15 research roundup.

Across the United States, the report estimated about $688 billion in economic activity and 2.3 million supported jobs over that reporting year. New York’s figures describe statewide activity rather than a separate estimate for the Finger Lakes.

Commerce reaches beyond a business’s hometown

The Harris roundup highlighted how online commerce connects businesses with distant customers. Orders from rural merchants traveled an average of about 1,118 miles, close to the 1,162-mile average for urban merchants.

The report’s methods identify those as 2025 global platform figures, measuring the shortest distance between a merchant’s location and the buyer’s shipping address. Rural and urban classifications use the DEGURBA geographic system.

Forty-one percent of stores launched with a single product. That finding describes stores on Shopify, rather than all American businesses.

The newsletter also reported that 86% of business leaders said e-commerce platforms made it easier to start a business than a decade earlier. The underlying Harris survey for Shopify ran March 9-25, 2026, among U.S. business owners and senior decision-makers.

Harris highlighted the findings as an example of how independent business owners can sell beyond their immediate communities, including from rural areas.

Economic impact includes wider supply chains

Shopify’s economic estimates use an input-output framework informed by merchant sales, partner revenue and OECD supply-chain data. They include direct, indirect and induced activity across the merchant and partner ecosystem.

The supported-job estimate consequently includes wider business activity and supply chains; it is not a count of newly created positions or Shopify’s own workforce.
