Seneca Falls pumpkin smash offers free composting event Nov. 14

Residents can smash their leftover pumpkins and learn about composting at a free Nov. 14 event at the Seneca County Community Garden in Seneca Falls.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County will host the Pumpkin Smash and Compost Event from 9 a.m. to noon at 2 South St. The event is open to all ages and will take place rain or shine.

Participants may bring pumpkins and gourds without paint or glitter. Natural Upcycle, based in Piffard, will haul away the collected material for composting, according to the release.

Activities and registration

The Seneca Falls Library will provide games and free books, while the Seneca GR&EEN Club will lead a composting demonstration and answer questions.

The event will also feature face painting, locally sourced cider, donuts and coffee. Participants can enter for a chance to win a backyard compost bin.

Organizers recommend dressing in layers and wearing closed-toe shoes, particularly if rain is forecast.

Registration is recommended, but walk-ins are welcome. Residents can register through CCE Seneca County or call 315-539-9251 if they do not have internet access.

Drop-off continues through Nov. 19

People unable to attend the event can leave pumpkins and gourds at the community garden from Saturday, Nov. 14, through Thursday, Nov. 19.

Drop-offs should be placed in the bins labeled “Natural Upcycle” under the pavilion.

Brad Ellis, CCE Seneca's environment and natural resources educator, said the event offers a way to reduce waste while helping residents learn about composting.

“Composting your pumpkins every year is just one of the many ways we can make progress,” Ellis said.
