Utica man pleads guilty to possessing child pornography

A Utica man with a prior conviction for sexually abusing a child pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography, federal prosecutors announced Monday.

Jeffrey Schreck, 63, admitted the offense in federal court, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

Schreck possessed numerous images and videos of child sexual abuse on a phone and tablet in February 2026. The material depicted children as young as 2, prosecutors said.

He was convicted in New York state court in December 1997 of two counts of second-degree sodomy involving an 11-year-old child. That prior conviction makes the current federal offense punishable by a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years.

The current charge also carries a fine of up to $250,000 and supervised release of five years to life. Schreck will be required to register as a sex offender.

Chief U.S. District Judge Brenda Sannes is scheduled to sentence him Feb. 5, 2027, at 11 a.m. in Syracuse.

Homeland Security Investigations investigated with State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica Carbone and Adrian LaRochelle are prosecuting the case under Project Safe Childhood, the Justice Department’s child exploitation enforcement initiative.
