Ithaca campaign urges dog owners to get pets licensed

The City of Ithaca is urging residents to license their dogs through its "Keep Ithaca Paws-itive" awareness campaign.

The city's campaign poster directs dog owners to its dog licensing information and says a license helps protect pets and supports the community's care for dogs.

Dog licenses are required throughout New York and are issued by the municipality where a dog lives, according to the city's licensing page. They are valid for one year, and owners receive renewal forms by mail before a license expires.

City residents applying for a new license must provide proof of a current rabies vaccination signed by a veterinarian. Owners seeking the lower fee for a spayed or neutered dog also need a veterinarian's certificate or letter.

Ithaca charges $15 to license a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for one that is not spayed or neutered.

Residents can apply online through the city's licensing page and pay online, in person or by mail. The City Clerk's Office is at 108 E. Green St., Ithaca, NY 14850.

The campaign poster points residents to cityofithacany.gov/dog for more information.
