William Smith volleyball saw its four-match win streak come to an end on Wednesday night, falling 3-0 to St. John Fisher in a non-conference matchup.
The Herons dropped a competitive opening set before St. John Fisher pulled away in the second and held off a late push in the third. William Smith fell to 11-3 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 12-6.
St. John Fisher took the first set 25-23 after William Smith held an early advantage. The Herons recorded 13 kills in the opening set, but the Cardinals responded with 15 and scored the final three points to take the lead.
The Cardinals carried that momentum into the second set, opening with a 5-1 advantage before earning a 25-20 victory. St. John Fisher finished the set with 14 kills, while William Smith recorded 12.
William Smith answered with its strongest offensive showing of the night in the third set, hitting .364 with 12 kills without an attacking error. St. John Fisher countered with 19 kills and ultimately secured the sweep with a 26-24 victory.
Cassidy Breuer led William Smith with nine kills and 14 digs, while Arielle Newsome added eight kills while hitting .467. Maren Hunt and Senya Dorny each recorded seven kills, with Dorny also contributing two aces and a block. Emily Fulton finished with six kills, five digs and three aces.
Kali Vanderhoof led the Herons with 16 digs, while Delainy Williams recorded 32 assists, seven digs and two aces.
William Smith finished with 37 kills, 54 digs and 10 service aces. St. John Fisher totaled 48 kills and three blocks.
The Herons return to action Saturday, October 10, against Hamilton in Clinton. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
