Torrey residents plan Oct. 13 forum on Vulcan data center proposal

Residents concerned about a proposed artificial intelligence data center at the Greenidge power plant, now called Vulcan, will hold a public forum Tuesday, Oct. 13, near Seneca Lake.

The discussion is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Seneca Stag Brewing, 1720 State Route 14, Penn Yan, according to a media advisory from the organizers, a group of Torrey residents and property owners.

The group says the plant's operators propose to expand operations and shift from cryptocurrency mining to a large AI data center. Organizers say the plan would draw 260 megawatts from the electric grid and roughly triple the facility's electricity consumption. Those figures are the group's description of the proposal, not an independent finding by the newsroom.

The forum is intended to examine what the proposed expansion could mean for public health, air and water quality, the regional economy and communities around the facility on Seneca Lake's western shore. The advisory does not say that a government agency will make a decision at the event.

Organizers plan a moderated panel with representatives of Seneca Lake Guardian and people who live or work near the plant. They also list the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association, Dryden Town Supervisor Jason Leifer and Climate Solutions Accelerator among those invited or expected to take part.

Attendees will be able to ask questions and describe their own experiences after the panel discussion. The event is scheduled to end at 7:30 p.m.

The advisory says light refreshments will be provided. Food from Seneca Stag's menu and drinks from a cash bar will be available for purchase.
