Geneva General Hospital nurse receives DAISY Award

Kali O'Sullivan, a nurse on Geneva General Hospital's 3-North unit, has received a DAISY Award for her care of patients and their families, University of Rochester Medicine Finger Lakes Health announced Monday.

The recognition followed a nomination from a patient's family. In the nomination shared by the health system, the family praised O'Sullivan's professionalism and guidance, saying she “worked with our family and provided above and beyond services.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses recognizes nurses nominated by patients, relatives or colleagues. Finger Lakes Health said the award honors compassionate, patient- and family-centered care.

O'Sullivan works as a registered nurse at Geneva General Hospital. The health system did not provide details about the patient or the medical care involved in the nomination.

The award is named for J. Patrick Barnes, who died after complications of an autoimmune disease in the late 1990s. His family created the nonprofit DAISY Foundation after the care he received from nurses during his illness. DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Honorees receive a certificate, an award pin and a sculpture titled “A Healer's Touch,” according to Finger Lakes Health. The health system said nurses across its facilities will be recognized at celebrations during the year.

Patients, family members and colleagues can nominate nurses. Finger Lakes Health said nomination boxes are available at Geneva General Hospital and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. The DAISY Foundation's nomination information is also available online.
