New York posts fastest state GDP growth in second quarter, federal data shows

New York's inflation-adjusted economy grew at a 4% annual rate in the second quarter of 2026, the fastest pace among states, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The national rate for the same quarter was 2.2%.

The state figure measures the change from the first quarter at an annualized rate. It does not mean New York's economy expanded 4% during those three months, and it does not show whether every region or household shared equally in the growth.

The federal release said real GDP increased in 44 states and the District of Columbia. State results ranged from New York's 4% gain to a 2.3% decline in West Virginia. Finance and insurance contributed most to New York's increase, the agency said.

Gov. Kathy Hochul highlighted the ranking, crediting state investments in jobs, industry and workforce development. The BEA figures document the growth rate and industry contributions; they do not, by themselves, establish that any particular state policy caused the increase.

The governor's office also cited information, real estate and rental leasing, and professional, scientific and technical services as contributors. Its announcement named investments by companies including Micron, IBM, Regeneron, Chobani and Fairlife, but those examples should not be read as a breakdown of the quarter's measured growth.

The BEA release provides state-level figures, not a separate second-quarter estimate for the Finger Lakes. The 4% figure therefore cannot be applied directly to local counties or used to infer a local jobs or wage trend. State GDP is a measure of production, distinct from household income and employment.

Wednesday's release also included a third estimate of national GDP and annual updates to economic accounts. Such figures can be revised as additional information becomes available. The BEA said the next state GDP release is scheduled for December.
