Fire crews spent more than three hours at a Williamson cold storage facility after a forklift struck an ammonia line Tuesday afternoon, according to Williamson Fire Company No. 1.
The company was called at about 1:15 p.m. Fire Chief Manahan reported a light fog coming from the east side of the building when crews arrived. Firefighters used water streams from an engine and ladder truck to reduce airborne ammonia, the company said.
East Williamson firefighters assisted at the scene, while Marion firefighters covered East Williamson’s district. Fire coordinators from Wayne County also responded. Hazardous materials teams from Ontario, Seneca and Cayuga counties and Wayne County’s decontamination team were alerted but released once the situation was under control.
The leak was secured with help from K.M. Davies employees. The state Department of Environmental Conservation responded to test air and water quality; the fire company did not report test results.
State police and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office handled traffic control. Williamson Volunteer Ambulance Service and Ontario Volunteer Emergency Service provided medical support. Fire crews returned to service around 4:30 p.m.
