Families visiting farmers markets in Waterloo and Seneca Falls next month can pick up a free locally grown pie pumpkin and take part in children's activities during two Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County Pumpkin Days.
The extension office said in a Sept. 28 release that the events are planned for Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Waterloo Farmers Market and Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Seneca Falls Farmers Market. Pie pumpkins from The Pumpkin Stand will be limited to one per family while supplies last.
Children who correctly answer a pumpkin question can receive a mini or carving pumpkin, also while supplies last. The extension office plans to offer samples of mini-pumpkin muffins, recipes and information about pumpkin nutrition.
Seneca County 4-H will provide fall activities and games for children, including a chance to decorate a pumpkin and win prizes. Visitors can also ask extension educators about the office's programs, agriculture economic development educator Judy Wright said in the release.
Seneca Recycles will offer reusable shopping bags or backpacks with recycling information for carrying purchases from the markets. Seneca County residents may take home a blue recycling bin while supplies last.
The Waterloo event runs from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 15 at Gem's, 1171 Waterloo-Geneva Road. The Seneca Falls event runs from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Seneca Falls Community Center, 35 Water St.
Both Pumpkin Days will take place alongside the respective farmers markets, where visitors can shop for locally grown produce.
