The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation has opened an inquiry into the death of a man shot by a state trooper at a campground in Greene County.
Amir Mahmoud Hamza died Sept. 14 after an encounter with members of the New York State Police in Cairo, according to the attorney general's office.
Troopers responded to the campground shortly after 8:30 p.m. following a 911 call, state officials said.
At about 8:42 p.m., Hamza allegedly emerged from a camper holding what appeared to be a handgun and moved toward a trooper. Police ordered him to drop the object, but he allegedly continued moving toward the trooper, investigators said.
One trooper fired a service weapon, striking Hamza. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said officers recovered a black BB gun.
The Office of Special Investigation reviews incidents in which a police or peace officer may have caused a person's death. State law requires the office to conduct a full investigation when its initial assessment indicates an officer may have been responsible.
The attorney general's office said the facts released so far are preliminary and could change as the investigation continues.
