The national average price for regular gasoline climbed 16 cents over the past week to $4.43 per gallon, AAA reported Thursday.
The average is now more than $1 higher than it was a year ago and is approaching the 2026 high of $4.56 set May 21.
AAA attributed the latest increase to elevated crude-oil prices and continued volatility around the Strait of Hormuz. Crude oil was averaging about $100 per barrel, according to the organization.
Current pump prices have returned to levels last seen during the spring. The record national average remains $5.01 per gallon, set June 14, 2022.
For electric-vehicle drivers, the national average price of electricity at public charging stations was unchanged during the week at 42 cents per kilowatt-hour.
