A federal judge temporarily blocked a Trump administration rule that would have capped most international students’ and exchange visitors’ stays at four years, according to Times Union.
Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV issued a preliminary injunction Monday, hours before the rule was scheduled to take effect, while a legal challenge proceeds.
The rule would end the “duration of status” policy and require many F-1 and J-1 visa holders to seek extensions, pay fees or leave and reenter the country.
The administration cited fraud and national security concerns, but Saylor wrote that the national security rationale “borders on absurd.”
International students contributed $5.9 billion to New York’s economy and supported 46,562 jobs during the 2024-25 academic year, data cited in the report show.
