New York’s Board of Regents unanimously directed state education officials to make Regents exams optional for students graduating in 2028, according to the Times Union.
Students graduating in 2027 must still pass the required exams, but those graduating in January 2028 or later would no longer need passing scores for a diploma.
The exams would remain available as one way for students to demonstrate what they have learned.
State officials are developing rules that could allow schools to assess students through projects, internships, research papers and presentations.
The department has not released the final requirements and urged current students to continue taking their existing courses.
