Manslaughter charge filed in 2025 death of Yates County toddler

A Penn Yan man has been charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide following an investigation into the June 2025 death of a toddler in the town of Potter, according to the Yates County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they responded to a home on State Route 364 on June 25, 2025, after a toddler was found unresponsive and not breathing. The child was taken to Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan and pronounced dead.

The investigation was presented to a Yates County grand jury by the Wayne County District Attorney's Office, which served as special prosecutor in the case, the sheriff's office said.

David Ingalls, 26, of Penn Yan was indicted on one count of second-degree manslaughter, a felony; one count of criminally negligent homicide, a felony; and three misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Ingalls was arrested on a Superior Court warrant and taken into custody without incident. He was being held at the Yates County Jail pending arraignment.
