A Canandaigua senior living community will host a public viewing later this month of a short documentary exploring the history and legacy of Roseland, the amusement park that operated on Canandaigua Lake for six decades.
Ferris Hills at West Lake will screen “Remembering Roseland” at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Rayburn Hall. The film was produced by the Ontario County Historical Society.
The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Ben Falter, the historical society’s director of education.
Roseland opened along the shores of Canandaigua Lake in 1925 under founder William Muar and operated for 60 years before closing in September 1985.
The park remains a prominent part of local history more than four decades later, and the documentary draws on recent interviews to examine several aspects of that legacy.
According to the historical society, the film includes perspectives on working at Roseland, development along the lakeshore, the new “Ghost of Roseland” sculpture at the north shore and the creation of the 2007 book “Roseland: Playground of the Finger Lakes.”
Ferris Hills at West Lake is located at 1 Ferris Hills on Peg Rayburn Drive in Canandaigua and can be accessed from either West Lake Road or Middle Cheshire Road.
