A proposed move of the Ontario County Department of Motor Vehicles into the former Canandaigua Post Office and plans for a new three-story building on South Main Street are among nine applications headed before the Canandaigua Planning Commission this week.
The commission meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Hurley Conference Room, 205 Saltonstall St. Six of the nine applications involve public hearings, including projects involving the former YMCA and Post Office at 32 N. Main St., a South Main Street pottery business and a redevelopment proposal spanning three properties.
At 32 N. Main St., 32 NMS LLC is seeking a special use permit to establish professional office space within the former YMCA gymnasium. The application also calls for site plan and historic alteration reviews associated with construction of an accessibility ramp and changes to the building’s west façade.
A separate application for the same address would allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to move into the first floor of the former Post Office. The commission will hold a public hearing on the special use permit needed for the professional office use. According to the agenda, that space had previously been approved for a restaurant through a use variance granted in May 2024.
Another potentially significant project involves 267 S. Main St., 11 Saltonstall St. and 19 Saltonstall St. Applicant 267 S Main Street Associates LLC is seeking several approvals to combine the properties, demolish existing structures and construct a 12,000-square-foot, three-story building with supporting infrastructure.
The application requires minor subdivision, special use permit, site plan and architectural reviews and will be the subject of a public hearing. The agenda describes the proposal as modifications to a project previously approved in February 2023.
Maci Roo Pottery is also bringing two applications involving 97 S. Main St. The first seeks site plan and historic alteration approvals for a 140-square-foot addition on the southeast side of the building, exterior renovations and new signage. The second seeks a special use permit to operate short-term rentals in two apartments within the existing building. Public hearings are scheduled for both applications.
The commission will also revisit Marathon’s request for architectural review of signage modifications at 540 N. Main St. That application was tabled at the commission’s Aug. 12 meeting.
Other applications include a historic alteration request from Will and Catherine Bossard to replace the roof on a barn at 82 Howell St.; a request from John A. Schuppenhauer to renovate the first-floor façade at 35 S. Main St.; and an application from BARC to replace signage at 84 S. Main St.
The commission’s agenda calls for approval of minutes from its Aug. 12 meeting before it begins reviewing the nine applications.
