The New York Mets erased a two-run deficit with a four-run eighth inning Sunday, rallying past the San Francisco Giants, 4-2, to secure the series victory.
The Mets (65-78) struggled to generate much offense for most of the afternoon before finally breaking through in the eighth. Brett Baty started the comeback with a pinch-hit solo home run that barely cleared the orange line atop the left-field wall. It was the second pinch-hit home run of Baty’s career and pulled New York within one run.
After the Giants intentionally walked Juan Soto with runners on the corners and two outs, Bo Bichette delivered the biggest blow of the afternoon. He crushed a hanging breaking ball from Carson Seymour deep into the seats for a three-run home run, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 Mets lead.
Kodai Senga then closed the door in the ninth, retiring all three batters he faced to record his sixth save opportunity converted in as many chances.
Christian Scott was sharp early, retiring his first 11 batters, but San Francisco broke through in the third inning with three consecutive singles. Jung Hoo Lee followed with a two-run single to put the Giants ahead.
Defensive miscues also contributed to Scott’s early exit. In the fifth, a potential double-play grounder bounced off Mark Vientos’ glove, putting runners on second and third. Scott finished with 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Cesar Perdomo held New York scoreless over six innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. However, the Giants’ bullpen could not protect his lead.
Tobias Myers earned the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning in his first MLB appearance since July 11.
The Mets will begin a series against the Miami Marlins on Monday at 1:10 p.m. Jonah Tong is scheduled to face Eury Pérez.
