Labor Day gas prices on track for record high, AAA says

Labor Day travelers are facing the highest gasoline prices ever recorded for the holiday period, with the national average at $4.14 per gallon, according to AAA.

The average rose 4 cents over the past week and is on track to surpass the Labor Day record of $3.82 set Sept. 3, 2012. AAA said the national average has never previously exceeded $4 on Labor Day.

AAA attributed the increase to continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, which has pushed crude oil prices into the $90-per-barrel range. The pressure follows what the organization described as a record-setting August at the pump.

Gasoline demand typically declines at the end of summer and helps bring prices down, but AAA said the high cost of crude oil is outweighing that seasonal pattern this year.

The national average price for electricity at a public electric-vehicle charging station held steady over the past week at 42 cents per kilowatt-hour.
