A NOAA Navigation Response Team is surveying a 97-square-nautical-mile area of Lake Ontario off Rochester to collect hydrographic data for habitat restoration and chart updates, according to RochesterFirst.
The New London-based crew is working in support of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and will remain in Rochester through the end of August.
Crews are measuring water conditions, including temperature and salinity, while mapping the lake bottom in a systematic pattern.
The data will support habitat restoration efforts in addition to helping NOAA maintain accurate nautical charts.
Navigation Response Team New London is one of five such teams nationwide and also responds to emergencies and natural disasters.
