The New York Yankees received encouraging news on Max Fried after the left-hander returned to the injured list with a recurrence of the bone bruise in his left elbow.
Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Fried has already resumed throwing following an MRI in New York, and the Yankees believe there is a chance he could miss only the minimum amount of time.
The club placed Fried on the 15-day injured list after he experienced discomfort following his most recent start against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. Boone said Fried was close to making his next scheduled start, but the Yankees ultimately decided to take a cautious approach.
“We just kind of collectively decided it’s probably best to make sure we get this calmed down and hopefully keep it a smaller issue,” Boone said.
Fried previously missed more than two months with the same injury, landing on the injured list after a May 13 start against the Baltimore Orioles before returning to the rotation July 22. Since coming back, the 32-year-old had been effective, allowing five runs over 24.2 innings across five starts for a 1.82 earned run average.
Overall, Fried is 4-4 with a 2.81 earned run average in 15 starts this season.
His latest absence comes as the Yankees are beginning to get other injured players closer to returning. Carlos Rodón was activated Tuesday to make his first big-league start since June 28, while Cody Bellinger is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees are also awaiting the returns of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge as they continue their push toward the postseason.
