Hundreds of runners, volunteers, and spectators filled the lakefront in Geneva over the weekend as the Geneva Half Marathon, 5K and Half Marathon Relay presented by Red Jacket Orchards brought competitors from across New York and beyond to the Finger Lakes Welcome Center.
It was a banner weekend for the event, with the half marathon and relay starting near Seneca Lake before runners made their way through a two-loop course around the city. Dozens of volunteers, YellowJacket Racing staff and event sponsors helped support runners along the course and at the start and finish area.
The individual half marathon produced 270 ranked finishers. Jay Chew of Elk Grove, California, took the overall victory, followed by Dave Cook of Marietta and Riley White of Newfield. Geneva’s Duncan Kipkoech finished fourth overall, while Andrew Shamy, also of Geneva, placed seventh.
Rachel Pinney of Pittsford was the first woman across the finish line, placing 11th overall. Fiona Klingbeil of Ballston Lake finished second among women and 12th overall, while Rachel Gustin Westerfer of Millerton, Pennsylvania, was third among women and 14th overall. The field included runners from throughout the Finger Lakes and Rochester regions, along with competitors who traveled from several other states.
The weekend also included a 5K that drew 99 finishers. Cook added another victory there, crossing the line in 16 minutes, 43 seconds. Kiran Gulati of Elmira finished second in 17:02, edging Timothy Stahlnecker of Waterloo, who finished one second later. Lexi Strobel of Odessa was the top female finisher in 23:38, followed by Angela Affronti of Webster in 24:20 and Geneva’s Heidi Westfall in 24:48.
Another 35 two-person teams completed the half marathon relay. Mastermiles, made up of Keene Goff and Mason Clark, won the relay with a chip time of 1:28:20. FreeBird, with Christopher Millard and Ethan Bower, finished second in 1:43:50, while Run for snacks, featuring Kyle Dacey and Steve Diehl, placed third in 1:44:01.
Beyond the results, the weekend turned the area around the Finger Lakes Welcome Center into a gathering place for runners and community members. Volunteers worked throughout the course while supporters lined portions of the route and gathered near the lakefront finish, helping make the race as much a community event as a competition.
