Canandaigua has temporarily closed its public beach and dog beach after harmful algal blooms were detected in the water.
City officials said both beaches are closed Friday, Aug. 7, as a precaution because of the presence of HABs, commonly referred to as blue-green algae.
The city said conditions can change rapidly depending on wind direction and water movement.
Officials plan to inspect the beach again Saturday morning. If the water appears clear, testing will be conducted to determine whether conditions are safe for swimming.
The city said it hopes to reopen both beaches Saturday if test results support doing so.
The closure comes heading into a summer weekend, and officials acknowledged the timing is disruptive for residents and visitors.
No additional details were released about the extent of the bloom or where it was first observed.
