Hector meeting to detail changes for Next Generation 911

Schuyler County emergency officials will hold a public meeting Aug. 19 to explain address changes planned for lake roads in the Town of Hector as the county moves toward a Next Generation 911 system.

The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hector Fire Department located at 5736 State Route 414. Residents on roads between Route 414 and Seneca Lake are encouraged to attend, ask questions and learn whether they may be affected.

The Schuyler County Emergency Management Office said the changes are intended to help firefighters, emergency medical crews and law enforcement officers locate homes more quickly and accurately. Next Generation 911 uses enhanced mapping and location information, but local addresses must meet modern public-safety standards for the system to work effectively.

Residential growth along Hector’s seasonal and lakeside roads has strained an addressing system created when many roads served only one or a few cottages, according to the county. New driveways, private lanes and branches have been added as development expanded.

Officials said some roads no longer have enough available numbers under the existing system. In other areas, multiple branches use the same road name, which can create confusion when emergency crews are trying to identify a specific home.

Kirk Smith, Schuyler County’s director of emergency services, said officials understand that residents may have longstanding ties to their addresses and that the changes were not made lightly. He said the goal is to ensure responders can find callers as quickly and accurately as possible.

Existing road names will be preserved when practical, according to the county. Some roads will retain most of their current identity, while others will need more substantial changes to create a clear and sustainable addressing system.

The county said the meeting will provide project information and allow affected lake road residents to raise questions before the changes move forward.
