Yankees acquire slugger Luis Garcia Jr. in trade with Nationals

The New York Yankees addressed their depleted lineup ahead of the trade deadline by acquiring first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals in exchange for four right-handed pitchers.

New York sent relievers Jake Bird, Yovanny Cruz and Ben Grable, along with Double-A starter Jack Cebert, to Washington. The move gives the Yankees another middle-of-the-order bat as they continue to play without Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton.

Garcia, 26, is enjoying the best offensive season of his career, batting .283 with 23 home runs, 76 RBI and an .873 OPS while leading the National League with a .560 slugging percentage at the time of the trade. The left-handed hitter has done most of his damage against right-handed pitching, posting a .918 OPS with 20 of his 23 home runs against righties. With one season of team control remaining after 2026, Garcia provides immediate offensive production.

Washington’s return centers on four pitchers from the Yankees’ organization. Cruz impressed in limited major league action this season with a 1.69 ERA in four appearances, while Bird departs after struggling to a 7.24 ERA in 32.1 innings since joining New York last season. Cebert, a 2025 15th-round draft pick, recorded a 4.03 ERA with 96 strikeouts across two minor league levels this year, and Grable, an 11th-round selection in 2025, posted a 2.79 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 29 Double-A innings.
