If the forecast comes true, several locations might threaten or shatter daily temperature records. The high humidity is also raising the heat index, which means it will feel much hotter than the actual air temperature.
Staying hydrated, avoiding intense outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and checking on neighbors, particularly older adults and those with chronic medical illnesses, are recommendations from health professionals. Meteorologists believe a strong upper-level area of high pressure is stifling cloud development and lessening the odds for widespread rain, fueling the heat dome. It is sunny and clear, and the temperatures just keep building every day.
Some areas may experience scattered afternoon thunderstorms, but they are not anticipated to bring prolonged relief to much of the impacted areas. Instead, many areas are likely to be in severe heat levels until the weather pattern begins to relax later in the forecast timeframe.
Emergency management experts are advising residents to monitor local weather, seek out cooling centers if needed, and pay attention to heat advisories. Electricity suppliers are also pushing customers to conserve power during peak demand hours as air conditioning usage grows.
