The New York Power Authority is reviewing 6,200 megawatts of additional renewable-energy projects beyond 5,500 megawatts already planned, according to the advocacy group Public Power NY.
The group said the potential projects were discussed during a NYPA Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday and cited the board's meeting agenda in its announcement.
Public Power NY is urging the state to build 15 gigawatts of public renewable generation by 2030. It said the larger target would help reduce electric bills, create union jobs and allow the state to close fossil-fuel peaker plants.
The group also criticized NYPA for what it described as a slow project rollout, saying the authority has not broken ground on planned public renewable projects since the Build Public Renewables Act was approved in 2023.
Public Power NY campaign coordinator Alex Patterson said the pace of development has greater consequences as high temperatures increase demand for affordable electricity.
The organization also objected to discounted power allocations it said were discussed for Anheuser-Busch, Kraft Heinz and IBM. Its release did not include a response from NYPA or the companies.
New York's latest state budget includes $100 million for public renewable projects, according to the group.
