Mets place Juan Soto on injured list with calf strain

The New York Mets will be without their top offensive player for the foreseeable future after placing Juan Soto on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left calf strain.

Interim manager Andy Green said imaging revealed a Grade 2 strain, an injury expected to sideline the five-time All-Star for at least three weeks. Soto exited Friday night’s 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers after experiencing discomfort while running the bases, marking his second calf injury of the season after missing 15 games earlier this year with a right calf strain.

Green said the organization is consulting additional medical experts before determining a more precise timetable but acknowledged Soto’s recovery is expected to take longer than his previous absence.

“Anticipation is right now it’s going to take longer than last time,” Green said. “He was about three weeks last time, so it’s a little more significant than last time. It’s not what we were hoping for.” Soto, the Mets’ lone All-Star this season, is batting .283 with 21 home runs, 52 RBI, and a National League-leading .947 OPS in 84 games.

New York recalled corner infielder/outfielder Eric Wagaman from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Soto’s roster spot.
