Lansing village officials are considering new fees and inspections to push vacant property owners toward code compliance, according to The Tompkins Weekly. The discussion came during a July 6 Village Board meeting focused on empty commercial and residential buildings.
Village code official Mike Scott identified just under a dozen vacant properties, including sites on East Shore Drive, Oakcrest Drive, and Cayuga Heights Road.
Officials also discussed empty commercial properties such as the former Friendly’s at Cayuga Shopping Center and the former Trip Hotel on Sheraton Drive.
Deputy Mayor Carolyn Greenwald pointed to fee structures used elsewhere to cover the extra work involved in inspecting and monitoring vacant buildings.
Mayor Ronny Hardaway said the village will keep exploring options to improve safety and building-code compliance.
