The Latino Health Coalition will bring free health screenings and community services to International Plaza in Rochester on Friday, Aug. 21, during its Unidos Por La Salud event.
The free, family-friendly gathering will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 828 North Clinton Avenue, where residents can receive health checks and connect with organizations offering help with health care, insurance, employment, job training, housing, legal services and financial literacy.
The event's full name is Unidos Por La Salud: Wellness and Health Engagement on Every Local Street, or United for Health/WHEELS. Organizers said the program is designed to make services more accessible to communities that may face barriers to receiving them.
Julio Jordan, chair of the Latino Health Coalition, said housing, food, employment, legal services and financial resources can affect a person's health and quality of life. The event brings providers together in one location so residents can connect with several types of support during one visit.
Foodlink and International Plaza partners will provide free food. The event will also include live music from Poder 97.1 FM, children's games, balloon art, voter registration and additional community information booths.
Jeffrey Freeman, health coalitions manager at the combined Common Ground Health, Finger Lakes Performing Provider System and Rochester RHIO organization, said the event reflects an effort to address health care needs and the social factors that shape health outcomes.
The Latino Health Coalition includes representatives from nonprofit organizations, hospital systems, insurers, businesses and government, along with community residents. The coalition works to improve health equity for Latino residents in the Rochester-Finger Lakes region.
The Aug. 21 event is open to everyone, and no admission fee is required.
