All motorboat operators in New York now need a safe boating certificate under the final phase of Brianna's Law, according to 14850. The requirement includes operators of personal watercraft such as Jet Skis and WaveRunners.
The law was signed in 2019 and phased in over five years before reaching all motorboat operators in 2025.
Approved courses cover navigation rules, emergency procedures, required equipment and responsibilities on shared waterways.
14850 reported that a Lansing course offers 10 scheduled hours with a certified instructor and other local boaters.
The certificate is valid for life, and residents can add an anchor icon to a New York driver's license through the DMV.
