Crews contain Route 90 house fire north of Aurora

Firefighters from across southern Cayuga County quickly contained a house fire Monday afternoon along Route 90 north of the village of Aurora, limiting damage to the home and an adjacent garage.

The Aurora Volunteer Fire Department and mutual aid companies were dispatched at about 4:45 p.m. July 13. Several Aurora crews were traveling to water rescue training when the call came in and immediately turned around to respond.

Aurora Rescue, Aurora Car 1 and Aurora Ambulance were the first units to arrive. The incident commander took control of the scene while the rescue crew deployed a handline and began bringing the fire under control.

The department’s water rescue crew returned its boat to the firehouse and brought additional firefighting equipment to the scene. As more units arrived, crews stretched handlines from Aurora Quint and Aurora Engine and extinguished the remaining fire.

Aurora Tanker established a portable water pond and emptied its tank to support the rural water supply operation.

After the flames were out, firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to search the home and garage for hidden hot spots. Once crews confirmed the fire was fully extinguished, personnel and apparatus were released from the scene and returned to service.

The house and neighboring garage were turned back over to the homeowner with minimal damage, according to the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

Mutual aid was provided by the Union Springs, King Ferry, Poplar Ridge, Aurelius, Genoa, Fleming and Scipio fire departments. Auburn City Ambulance, Cayuga County Fire Investigation and the Cayuga County Office of Emergency Services also responded.
