Driver killed in tractor-trailer crash in Scipio

A driver was killed Thursday morning when a tractor-trailer hauling liquid manure went off the shoulder and overturned on state Route 34B in the town of Scipio, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called at about 8:31 a.m. on Thursday to Route 34B just south of Fleming Scipio Town Line Road for a reported single-vehicle tractor-trailer crash.

Sheriff Brian Schenck said deputies determined a southbound 1996 Freightliner went off the shoulder of the roadway and overturned as it came back onto Route 34B.

The operator, who was the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office said the driver’s name was not being released immediately because family notification had not been completed.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. No further information was released Thursday.

Several agencies assisted at the scene, including New York State Police, state Environmental Conservation Police, Cayuga County Emergency Services, Cayuga County 911, the Cayuga County coroner, multiple fire departments, ambulance agencies and the state Department of Transportation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office at 315-253-1222 and press 0 when prompted.
